ACTIVITIES IN BOISE (A FEW THINGS TO DO)

Idaho is known for its many outdoor activities (camping, hiking, backpacking, biking, horseback riding, water sports, winter sports, wild life, golfing) and scenic motorcycle routes to Coeur d'Alene.

  1. The Boise River Greenbelt is a series of tree-dotted trails and parks hugging the water's edge. Step outside the Riverside Hotel and take a walk. This 25-mile tree-lined pathway is a mecca for locals. It goes right through the heart of the city and provides scenic views, wildlife habitat and pedestrian access to many of the popular riverside parks. Bring your bikes down to the Greenbelt and cruise along the path, stopping at multiple Idaho wineries along the way. Telaya, Coiled, Cinder and Split Rail are just a few located off the pathway. Cheers!
  2. Boise Trolley Tours - (I enjoyed it). This fully narrated 75min tour covers downtown Boise History, Warmsprings Rd, Hyde Park and the East End. Fun for the whole family, we are the Original Boise Trolley Tour. Tours leave once daily from May 1st-Sept 30th. M-F at 11am and Sat & Sun. at 2pm. Tours leave from Joe's Crab Shack Parking lot. next to the Riverside Hotel).
  3. There are no casinos in Boise but the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort, in Worley, is the largest Idaho casino. It's 378 miles from Boise but the drive is spectacular. The casino has a 300-room hotel, a spa, seven restaurants, and an 18-hole golf course, as well as a 100,000 square-foot casino.
  4. Shopping in Boise:
    • Boise Factory Outlets - Outlet mall featuring a mix of stores that offer bargain clothing, home goods & other merchandise.
    • Boise Towne Square - Boise Towne Square is a mall in the western United States, located in Boise, Idaho. The largest retail complex in the state, it opened in 1988 after more than 20 years of planning, and features 150 stores, with Macy's, JCPenney, Kohl's and Dillard's as anchor stores.
    • The Village at Meridian - Outdoor shopping mall with familiar chains, casual dining options, a play area & a movie theater.Be sure to check out "The Village at Meridian"! For shopping and dining it's a "must place to go"! It offers Upscale Apparrel, Bling (jewelry), Music, great restaurants (almost every cuisine), .etc., .etc., .etc. In the five years since opening, The it has become a cornerstone for shopping and dining at the state's busiest intersection, Eagle Road and Fairview Avenue. It comes highly recommended by our very own Dave and Barb Ackerman. Less than 9 miles from our hotel.

  5. Breweries in Boise:
    • Boise Brew Bus | Brewery Tours| Wine Tasting| Epic Tours - https://www.boisebrewbus.com/
    • Lost Grove Brewery is located in Boise’s up and coming Lusk District.
    • Clairvoyant Brewing Company is a renovated auto repair shop and has a modern industrial feel. Located next to Esther Simplot Park, this a great place to grab a beer before walking over to enjoy the outdoors.
    • Payette Brewing - a fantastic indoor/outdoor vibe
  6. The Basque Block - Numbering about 16,000, Boise's Basque community is one of the largest such communities in the United States. Boise area Basques are very proud of their unique heritage like all other Basque communities, but the Boise and Treasure Valley Basques have a unique area to call their own - The Basque Block! It's super-cool, and many Boise natives descend from this special region – even the Mayor! But every Boisean delights in lunchtime paella on The Basque Market’s patio. It happens every Wednesday and Friday at noon – but you better plan to get there by 12:15 or it will be sold out!
  7. Warhawk Air Museum - Caldwell, ID - some of the rarest fighter airplanes still in existence.
  8. Idaho State Museum - a great mix of informative and interactive exhibits. Learn about Idaho’s landscapes, how and why people settled here, and Idaho’s story in a regional and national context. I’d say this is a stop to get a total overall understanding of Idaho’s history and is a perfect place to bring the whole family. The museum is open every day.
  9. Boise Art Museum (located in an art deco building) has contemporary works and an outdoor sculpture garden. It is adjacent to the Idaho State Museum. It has collections of contemporary realism, ceramics, and the largest public collection of art from famous Idaho artist, James Castle.
  10. Old Idaho Penitentiary - daily guided tours or do the self-guided tour to explore the grounds that once held some of the West’s most desperate criminals from 1872 to 1973. This site features 30 historic buildings and special exhibits. It has 19th-century prison cells and gallows, plus historic military weaponry.
  11. Freak Alley Gallery - Northwest’s largest open-air, multi-artist mural gallery, and was started by one man simply painting an alleyway door in 2002. The murals change twice yearly and are all done by local artists spanning from 7 to 35 years of age! Take a walk through the alley and you’re sure to be amazed by the creativity and talent of these outdoor artists.
  12. Aquarium of Boise - Get up close and personal with Black Tip Reef Sharks, stingrays, and Pufferfish at the Aquarium of Boise. This facility houses over 250 species of animals and offers special pools where you can feeds sharks and rays. Have fun learning about marine animals and other exotic creatures at this family-friendly spot.
  13. Idaho Botanical Garden - A beautiful family-friendly garden space.
  14. Zoo Boise - Located in beautiful Julia Davis Park, Zoo Boise is home to over 300 animals from more than 100 species. From the small tailless whip scorpion to the majestic Amur tiger, the zoo offers a unique educational and recreational experience for visitors of all ages. Zoo Boise’s newest addition is a 1.5-acre expansion replicating Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, Africa.
  15. Capital City Public Market - Experience downtown Boise while enjoying the Capital City Public Market. This open air market features more than 100 vendors with fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade crafts, and locally raised meat. Sip and sample local wines as you enjoy your Saturday morning.
  16. "Birds of Prey" - Get nose-to-beak with raptors! Visit the World Center for Birds of Prey and learn all about how we are conserving raptors around the world! Meet live birds of prey up close, see California Condors, and more! Open Tuesday through Sunday
  17. Hike Table Rock - I've done it! A lot of locals do this every week – it’s a tradition of sorts, and when you get to the top you will see why. The most popular route climbs steeply from the Old Penitentiary parking lot to the top. It’s an old road, so it’s quite wide for the majority of its length – just keep looking up! When you get to the top, take in the stunning views of the rolling foothills and cityscapes below.
  18. Idaho Shakespeare Festival - "Much Ado About Nothing" (May 20 - June 11).. Box Office: 208-336-9221
  19. Boise has a sundry of culinary choices and includes many great restaurants (too many to mention). Taking a walk down 8th Street in downtown Boise gives you a real sense of the up-and-coming culinary scene. Do a progressive dinner down the block and be sure to hit some of our favorites: Fork, Alavita, Juniper and Red Feather. All of these establishments have a fierce loyalty to showcasing local products – you can’t go wrong! If you’re feeling like a nightcap afterwards, head around the corner to the Coiled Wine Bar for a sip of some of Idaho’s finest.
  20. High Desert Harley Davidson -One of my favorite places  in Boise...2310 E Cinema Dr, Meridian, 83642 ID. Stop and get a shirt to remember your trip to Boise.
