CAPTAIN GORDON C JOHNSON

Gordon C. Johnson arrived in Vietnam in 1968 and was assigned to A/2-501 IN. He was also on our "Lost Avengers" list because we had lost contact with him. Sadly, Gordon is no longer with us.
Johnson was in command of Company A, 2-501 on the night of 12 May 1969 on FSB Airborne.

OBITUARY
 
Military Graveside Funeral Services for Gordon Chester "Chet" Johnson, age 81, of Carriere, MS, formerly of Slidell, LA, who passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020, will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at 9:00 am at Biloxi National Cemetery. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home. Father Patrick Mockler will officiate the service. A native of Gray, KY, he was a Major (Ret) USA. In his early life "Chet" was a member of the Kentucky National Guard in the 1950's, joining the Navy in 1956 serving as a shipfitter aboard 2 destroyers. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1960, Chet joined the US Army, attending Airborne School at Ft Campbell KY, and earnng his silver blood wings. He was assigned to 506th Parachute Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Chet attended Officers Candidate School in 1964 at Ft. Benning Ga. In August 1966 He was ordered to lead an advanced party to Ben Hoa, Vietnam, training Infantry Combat soldiers. He experienced combat while in Vietnam earning the esteemed Combat Infantry Badge. After one year at Ft. Carson, he was assigned back to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne division. He was awarded the bronze Star with V device and Purple Heart after the battle of Ashua Valley. He was also involved directly with Battle of Dong-Ap-Bia, otherwise known as Hamburger Hill, receiving his 2nd Bronze Star, as well as his 3rd Bronze Star. Gordon Johnson retired with 22 years of Active Duty. Upon retirement, Chet joined the staff of Louisiana State University as an Associate County Agent and worked faithfully for another 22 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester B. Johnson and Lucy Fry Johnson; his former wife, Lou Ann "Lulu" Johnson; his son, Michael Johnson; and his sisters, Corine Church and Jewel Stevenson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jerri Swanson Johnson; his children, Lisa Hargett, Justine Johnson, Dori Thompson, Cindy Davidson, Claudia Cialona, Jenny Bridges, William (Abby) Mason, Mike (Jessica) Mason, and John Mason; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
